Stormwater Track

Station 4 - Healthy ecosystems and clean water

Up to 60% of adult human bodies are water. Water is one of the most important things we consume every day. Water is necessary for all living things, not just humans. To protect the supplies of clean water that are essential for our lives, we need to protect the environment that provides that clean water. How can we do this?

  • We can watch what chemicals get into our storm sewers that will eventually flow into our streams and rivers.
  • We can protect green spaces that allow water to seep through to join the groundwater.
  • We can restore areas around streams so that they are protected from dangerous runoff.
  • We can limit the construction of new paved areas, and where possible, replace concrete and asphalt with permeable paving.
  • We can notice and report chemical dumping.

Even small efforts make a difference, like switching to organic lawn fertilizers and washing your car with environmentally-friendly products.
